A Life of Service: Honoring Art J., A Marine Corps Veteran and Retired R.N.
As we celebrate #NationalNursesWeek, we are proud to recognize the remarkable journeys of the nurses who call our community home. Each story reflects a lifetime of care, resilience, and dedication.
Art's path into nursing began in an unexpected way. After being drafted into the Marine Corps, he underwent several days of aptitude testing, which led to his assignment as a medic. Though he initially didn’t know what the role would entail, it would become a defining chapter of his life.
He completed boot camp in San Diego and continued training in North Carolina, serving four years as a medic. His experiences providing medical care during that time were intense and, at times, deeply distressing. Yet, he reflects on his service with pride. “It was one of the proudest times in my life,” he shares, describing the Marine Corps as a lifelong brotherhood built on unwavering commitment.
Following his military service, Art pursued an extensive education, earning three degrees: a nursing degree, a bachelor’s in applied behavioral science, and a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering. His unique expertise led to the development of three patents for disposable medical products, contributing to innovation in healthcare.
One of the most impactful moments in his early nursing career came during school, when he cared for a double amputee patient—an experience that shaped his understanding of both the emotional and physical realities of patient care.
Art went on to spend over a decade working in senior living and later owned and operated seven Adult Family Homes in Oregon City, continuing his commitment to serving others.
When reflecting on his life, he shares that raising his children stands as his greatest source of pride.
Today, as a resident at Gilman Grove, he finds meaning in the community around him. “I’ve met some of the most amazing people here,” he says, noting the strength and grace of those navigating aging and loss.
Art's story is a powerful example of the lifelong impact of #nursing. This National #NursesWeek, we honor his service, his resilience, and his continued presence in our community.

“Not retired, just tired.”
As we celebrate #NationalNursesWeek, we’re honored to once again spotlight Sue, one of our remarkable residents. We first shared her story last year, and it’s one worth revisiting. 💙
Sue is a proud University of Oregon graduate (‘67), a dedicated nurse for 40 years, and a lifelong caregiver at heart. Inspired by her mother and brother, she began her journey in public health before finding her calling in women’s health and obstetrics, where she supported countless families with compassion and innovation.
She takes deep pride in mentoring future nurses, always encouraging them to follow their own paths and lead with heart. Sue reminds us that nursing is constantly evolving—from the handwritten notes of her early days to today’s digital charts—and that there’s no single way to be a great nurse.
“Don’t keep your sights narrow,” she says. Whether in a hospital, senior living community, or even at Boeing, there’s a place for every nurse to make an impact.
Sue also shared treasured memorabilia from her journey, including her nursing cap, graduation pin, and a photo from her student days in 1963—powerful reminders of a lifetime dedicated to caring for others.
Thank you, Sue, for your wisdom, strength, and humor—and for reminding us that once a nurse, always a nurse.
