In the present, Gilman Grove is proud to celebrate 30 years of supporting older adults and their families, carrying forward deep roots in the community while embracing a bright, revitalized future thanks to a recent remodel.
A Caregiver’s Story: 28 Years of Dedication
No celebration of Gilman Grove’s history would be complete without recognizing Rosann Lister, a Caregiver who has been with the community for nearly its entire history. Rosann joined in September 1997, just two years after Gilman Grove first opened, and has faithfully served for 28 years.
“I’ve been taking care of older adults since I was 18,” Rosann reflected. “I started in skilled nursing, but once my kids started school, I switched to assisted living. I’ve been here ever since.”
Her story is deeply personal, shaped by being raised by her grandparents and surrounded by their friends as a child. “I felt close to this age group my whole life. I love the people here, and I’ve always gotten along with every single resident. I rarely experience conflict because the relationships we build feel like family.”
Rosann has served in many roles — caregiver, housekeeping manager, even filling in wherever needed — but caregiving has remained her heart’s work.
“This is something I want to do until I retire. It’s rewarding. The residents and I enjoy each other’s company, and they’re truly part of my family.”
She has also witnessed remarkable changes over the years. “Managers are more involved now in every part of the community. Life enrichment is much more active than it used to be, and caregiving as a whole has improved a lot. Everyone seems drawn back here, and I think that speaks to the family culture we’ve built.”
The People Who Bring Heart to Gilman Grove
Gilman Grove is not only home to long-serving caregivers but also a place where new leaders find their calling.
Jenny White, our Business Office Manager, has worked here for a total of eight years. She first started as a volunteer during an internship, and when residents petitioned to bring her on as an activity assistant, her journey with Gilman Grove truly began. She has since grown into leadership, serving as Business Office Manager for the past year and a half, and even stepping in as temporary administrator twice.
What has stood out most to her is the support from the broader community. “I see firsthand how much our community loves Gilman Grove. People donate fishing poles for our trips, craft supplies, and countless other things for our residents. Gilman Grove is well known here, and that reputation comes from 30 years of being part of this city.”
Todd Whitehead, our Executive Director, describes Gilman Grove as “welcoming, supportive, home-like, engaging, and vibrant.”
He also emphasizes the long-term partnerships that keep the community connected: “Over the years, Gilman Grove has built strong relationships with churches, volunteers, the VFW, healthcare providers, referral agencies, and senior centers. Together, we’ve grown alongside one another. We rely on each other, and that interconnectedness is part of what makes Gilman Grove so special.”
Todd also spoke to the impact of the recent remodel: “The upgrades not only improved the look of Gilman Grove but also lifted spirits. They reinforced our commitment to quality and reminded everyone that this community is still investing in its future.”
Residents Reflect on Home
At the heart of Gilman Grove are the residents who shape daily life with their stories, friendships, and leadership.
Caren is a resident and the president of the resident organization. When looking for a place to move, she was immediately struck by the south-facing windows in her apartment and the vibrant activity calendar.
“I can’t sit still, so I love the exercise classes — seated Tai Chi, even salsa dancing for Hispanic Heritage Month! There’s always something to do, and the variety keeps life interesting.”
She has also formed deep connections with other residents, noting that many enjoy taking on leadership roles, which adds value both to the community and to their own lives.
Jan, a resident for 14 years and longtime member of the resident council, said her choice was clear from the start. “When I toured Gilman Park, there was chatter, communication, and activity. That hasn’t changed. The camaraderie among residents makes a real difference.”
Jan especially appreciates the remodel. “It’s a lovely update, but the heart of the community — the principles it was built on — remain the same. It’s endured, and that gives me comfort.”
Linda, a resident for eight years, has a personal tie to Gilman Grove. Her mother lived here in the early 2000s, and Linda remembers visiting her and hearing, “I’ve got to go, bingo is starting!”
When Linda was ready for assisted living, she chose Gilman Grove because of those memories and was delighted to find that Rosann, the same caregiver who supported her mother, was still here.
“It’s special to have that continuity,” Linda shared. She also loves being close to her family and enjoying the courtyard views from her apartment, where resident-led gardens attract hummingbirds throughout the day.
30 Years of Roots and Renewal
Looking back, Gilman Grove’s story is defined by deep roots — caregivers like Rosann who have dedicated their careers to serving residents, long-standing relationships with neighbors and partners, and residents who make the community vibrant and meaningful.
Looking forward, Gilman Grove is equally defined by renewal. The recent remodel symbolizes not just an investment in the building but an investment in people — in residents, families, and future generations of older adults who will call Gilman Grove home.
As Todd reflected: “Our remodel is a reminder that we’re not just preserving the past — we’re building a future. Gilman Grove has been here for 30 years, and with every change, we’re finding new ways to grow, serve, and stay rooted in the community we love.”
Oregon City, rich with history as Oregon’s first incorporated city and a landmark of the state’s story, has always embodied resilience and community. For 30 years, Gilman Grove has shared in that spirit — honoring its roots while embracing a vibrant future.
