Jack has spent decades passionately collecting military memorabilia, honoring not only his own service but the legacy of others who served before him.
Years ago, Jack was entrusted with a deeply personal collection: the daughter of WWI Marine Emil G. Tschanz gifted him her father’s military memorabilia, knowing how much it would mean to a fellow Marine. Now, Jack is ready to share this history with a broader audience.
The Oregon Military Museum has officially accepted Jack’s donation of Emil G. Tschanz’s 1918 diary, along with other cherished artifacts. Emil enlisted in December 1917, and his diary offers vivid accounts of daily life during WWI — including details about staying connected to loved ones through letters, many meals that were enjoyed, travel, drills, loss, and reflections on the signing of the Armistice amidst cheerful Vaudeville performances.
Also included in Jack’s donation:
- Emil’s Marine Corps discharge letter, with notes on receiving his Victory Medal and Oregon Bronze Medal
- Portraits of Emil and family members
- A 1919 War Service Certificate
- Clippings and memorabilia reflecting the wartime experience
A heartfelt thank you to Kathleen, the Oregon Military Museum Director, for coming to Gilman Grove to personally pick up Jack’s donations and ensure these treasured items find their rightful home. The visit was especially meaningful, as Jack’s brother — who was also a resident of Gilman Grove — had worked with Kathleen in the past. It was touching to see that connection rekindled and to witness the shared ties between Jack’s family, The Oregon Military Museum, and the local veteran posts that continue to support and honor our heroes.
Please join us in thanking Jack, not only for his service to our country, but for his dedication to preserving the stories of Marines who came before him. Through this donation, Emil’s legacy will live on for generations to come.
We look forward to visiting and touring the Oregon Military Museum to learn more about this powerful history, honor the sacrifices made, and see Jack’s meaningful contributions on display.
